Automotive AC works by compressing a refrigerant, letting it shed heat in the condenser at the front of the car, then expanding it inside the evaporator behind the dashboard where it absorbs heat from the cabin air. Every stage depends on the correct refrigerant charge and on the compressor being properly lubricated by oil that circulates with it.
That is why running a system that is low is genuinely damaging rather than merely disappointing. Low charge means low oil circulation, and a compressor starved of oil is an expensive component to replace. Weak cooling is a reason to investigate promptly, not to keep driving with the fan turned up.
Cabin smell is a separate and very common complaint. The evaporator sits in a dark, permanently damp box, which is an ideal environment for microbial growth. That is treated by cleaning the evaporator and housing and replacing the cabin filter - not by masking it with a fragrance.

The system is evacuated and refilled to the manufacturer's specified charge weight, not filled until it feels cold.
Condenser airflow and fan operation are checked too - poor cooling in traffic is frequently a fan fault, not a gas fault.
Cabin odour is addressed by cleaning the evaporator and replacing the filter, not by covering it with fragrance.
How the visit runs
Vent temperature and system pressures are measured against ambient conditions to establish how far off the system is.
Condenser, fans, blower and cabin filter are inspected, since these cause many weak-cooling complaints on their own.
If the charge is low, the leak is traced with dye or an electronic detector before any refrigerant is added.
The fault is repaired, then the system is evacuated and vacuum-held to confirm it holds before recharging.
Refrigerant and oil are added to the specified weight and the vent temperature is rechecked.
Cold on the move, warm in traffic - and the gas was fine. That is a worked example of this sequence rather than a customer’s job, written out from the first symptom to the reading that confirmed the repair.
