01Labour

Time on your vehicle, estimated from the work it actually needs rather than a flat figure applied to every car with four wheels. Where a job is likely to run long - a fastener someone has previously over-tightened, an access panel that has to come off first - you are told that while the estimate is still an estimate.

02Parts

Every component that stays on the car, listed by name and specification rather than as a single word. Where there is a genuine choice between options at different price points, both go on the estimate and you pick the one you want fitted.

03Consumables

What the job uses up rather than fits: oil and fluids, cleaners, sealants, drain plug washers, gloves, absorbent mats. Small individually, and itemised rather than folded into the labour line where nobody can see them.

04Diagnosis time

Where a fault has to be found before it can be priced, the testing is time and appears as its own line. It is the line that keeps a diagnosis from being paid for in unnecessary parts, which is the more expensive way to do it. The worked examples show that line doing its job, including the times a test cleared the expensive part instead of condemning it.

Anything charged for belongs to one of those four lines, and each is written out rather than rolled into a single total. If a line does not make sense to you, ask - it gets explained rather than defended.
