Every engine makes noise. What matters is whether a noise is new, whether it changes with engine speed or road speed, and whether it appears cold or hot. Those three questions narrow most diagnoses considerably before anyone opens a bonnet.
A ticking or tapping that follows engine speed
A light, rapid tick that speeds up with the engine usually comes from the valvetrain. On a cold start it is often hydraulic lifters that have drained down overnight and take a few seconds to pump up - common, and usually not serious if it disappears within moments.
A tick that persists once warm is worth investigating. Low oil level or pressure is the first thing to rule out, because starving the valvetrain of oil damages it quickly. An exhaust manifold leak also produces a distinctive tick that is loudest at cold start and quietens as metal expands and seals.
A deep knock that gets louder under load
A different noise sometimes called knock or pinking is a sharp metallic rattle under acceleration, caused by abnormal combustion rather than worn parts. Poor fuel quality, incorrect ignition timing, carbon build-up or a failed knock sensor can all cause it. It is less immediately fatal than bearing knock but it damages pistons over time and should not be ignored.
Squealing or chirping from the front of the engine
This almost always comes from the accessory drive belt or something it drives. A belt that squeals on start-up and settles is usually glazed, worn or slack. A squeal that persists can be a failing tensioner or a seizing pulley bearing on the alternator, water pump or AC compressor.
It is worth acting on because of what the belt drives. On many engines that includes the water pump, and a belt that snaps in traffic means no coolant circulation and no charging - which turns a cheap belt into an overheat within a few kilometres.
A whine that rises with engine speed
Whining that tracks engine speed usually comes from a bearing or a pump - alternator bearing, power steering pump, or a worn belt tensioner pulley. If the whine appears mainly when you turn the steering wheel, the power steering system is the obvious suspect: check the fluid level first, since low fluid causes exactly this.
A whine that tracks road speed rather than engine speed is a different animal entirely - that points at wheel bearings, tyres or the differential, and it will change character when you steer gently left and right at a steady speed.
Hissing or a sweet smell
Hissing after switching off, especially with a sweet smell, usually means coolant reaching something hot. Look for a leak at hoses, the radiator and the expansion tank once the engine is cold. Never open a hot cooling system - the pressure release causes serious burns.
Hissing while running can also be a vacuum leak, which typically comes with a rough or hunting idle and possibly a check engine light for a lean condition.
The short list: stop driving immediately
- A deep knocking that intensifies with engine load
- Any loud noise accompanied by the oil pressure warning lamp
- Grinding or screeching from the engine that starts suddenly
- Noise together with a rising temperature gauge or steam from the bonnet
- A loud bang followed by rough running and a significant loss of power
In each of those cases the cost of stopping is a recovery. The cost of continuing is frequently an engine. That is not a close decision.
