In an automatic, the fluid is not just lubricant - it is the hydraulic medium that applies the clutches and, in a torque converter, the thing that transmits drive at all. Degraded fluid means slower, less positive clutch application, which means slip, which means heat, which degrades the fluid further. That loop is why a neglected automatic can go from slightly lazy to badly damaged quite quickly.
Different transmission types fail differently and need different fluids. A conventional torque-converter automatic, a dual-clutch unit, a CVT with a steel belt and a manual gearbox each have their own specified fluid, and using the wrong one can cause real damage even when the level is perfect. We identify the type and the specification before touching anything.
In a manual, the symptoms are mechanical: a clutch that bites very high, a pedal that feels vague, a gear that grinds on a fast change, or a judder from a standing start. Some of that is adjustment or hydraulics, some of it is a worn clutch. Testing tells you which, and the two are very different jobs.
