The dreaded “Ignition fault” message can occur in a variety of vehicles. This is one of the most common BMW problems, and it has a few possible causes and fixes.
Here I explain what causes this error, what you can do to get rid of it, and how it can be prevented. Keep reading.
Why Does a BMW Have an Ignition Fault?
Your car’s ignition system has failed if you’re getting an “ignition fault” on your dashboard. An ignition system problem could be causing your BMW engine to struggle to start.
Based on my experience as a mechanic, there are other components that can cause this.
Reasons behind BMW “Ignition Fault”
A BMW’s ignition fault can be caused by several causes.
1. Damaged battery safety terminals
A damaged battery safety terminal is the most common cause of BMW “Ignition fault” warnings.
By using a safety terminal, electrical fires can be prevented.
In this case, the “Ignition fault” warning will display as a result of the fuse failing.
BMW batteries have a safety terminal on the positive terminal.
2. Insufficient voltage in the battery
The “ignition fault” warning can also be triggered by low battery voltage.
It is possible that the starter motor or alternator of your car will not operate properly if the battery is low.
It will also cause an ignition fault message to appear on the dashboard.
The battery voltage of your BMW should be checked before starting it if it hasn’t been driven for some time.
Your battery terminal voltage can be measured using a multimeter.
It should be replaced if the BMW battery is older than four years, as a dead battery can cause a low voltage issue as well.
3. Alternator failure
The alternator charges your BMW’s battery and provides power to the electrical system.
If it is not functioning correctly, it can cause low voltage problems and ignition fault messages.
Even with its rarity, alternators still malfunction, such as with damaged batteries and bad safety terminals. If your alternator is faulty, you should replace it immediately.
4. Defective starter
BMWs with bad starters also suffer from ignition faults.
Whenever you turn the ignition key, the starter turns over the flywheel of your BMW to engage the engine.
An engine that is not starting properly is due to a malfunctioning starter.
Reset and Fix BMW “Ignition Fault” Warnings
Having learned what might cause your BMW to display an “ignition fault” message, it’s time to fix it.
Step 1
My first recommendation is to replace the battery safety terminal, which is relatively simple and inexpensive.
The safety terminal is also available at your local BMW dealership, via Google search using the term “BMW battery safety terminal,” or at any auto parts store carrying BMW parts.
Having the part already makes replacing it quick and easy.
Start your car again if the problem persists. If this does not happen, you must move on.
Step 2
You might have a bad battery or alternator if replacing the Battery safety terminal does not resolve your problem.
To test whether the car will start, I recommend jumping it from another vehicle.
In this case, your battery or alternator is at fault.
Taking it to BMW or a qualified independent mechanic can diagnose and fix the problem if the car still exhibits the “ignition fault” and will not start.
Why Is My BMW Not Turning On?
Several reasons might cause a BMW to not turn on, but a defective starter is a common cause.
1. Troubleshooting a starter motor:
In the event of a solenoid malfunction or starting motor damage, the engine cannot turn or work, resulting in a no start.
2. Weak or Dead Battery:
Having a weak or dead battery can cause your starter to not function if there is insufficient power supply. Battery inspections and replacements should be performed regularly.
3. Problems with ignition switches:
If the ignition switch is defective, the electric flow will be interrupted, preventing the engine from starting.
4. Faulty Starter Relay:
A starter delay is usually used in combination with a starter motor to provide power to the motor when it starts up. Start-up problems can be caused by faulty relays.
5. Fuel Delivery Issues:
The malfunction of a fuel pump or similar component can cause a no-start problem due to insufficient fuel delivery.
Diagnose Starter Ignition Problems in 3 Easy Steps:
1. Battery check:
In order to help the engine run smoothly, make sure the batteries are working properly and replace or repair a dead one.
2. Solenoid starter test:
Using a multimeter, the solenoid should be tested to make sure it works. If it fails, it must be replaced.
3. Test of the starter motor:
Make sure the starter motor is not worn out, damaged, or making strange noises. Starter motors must be replaced if necessary.
